A Giant Talent
Oregonians were always glad that he was on their TV… and not in front of their homes. For almost a decade, Mark Glyzewski was the “man on the scene” for Good Day Oregon. If he was in your neighborhood, Mark could be covering anything from a stabbing to a shooting to a snowstorm. There were so many tough stories that he handled with professionalism and integrity. But here’s some really tough news for the GDO family: our gentle giant is saying goodbye.
Today was Mark’s last broadcast for Good Day Oregon. He is leaving TV news to work for the marketing and communications department of Salem Health. It’s a big loss for us at Fox 12, and not just because he’s 6’7″.
But while Mark is known for covering serious and sober stories… he’s actually a fun-loving guy with a great sense of humor. Mark and I have spent a lot of time discussing golf and video games (and lamenting the fact that as fathers we have time for neither). He’s a Wisconsin transplant, and always happy to discuss Packers football- especially these days. Put simply, Mark is one of my favorite people in the newsroom, and we’re all going to miss him.
But while the GDO crew is sad to see him go, we are all very happy for his new opportunity. Hopefully, it will allow Mark to spend more time with his wife Stephanie and daughter Hope (who is a tall drink of water like her old man). I know for a fact that he won’t miss getting up at 2 AM every day. And in his new media relations capacity, we’ll almost certainly get to work with him again down the road.
Still, it won’t be the same here without Marky G. He’s a great reporter and a great guy with some awfully big shoes to fill.
Seriously. He’s like a size 15.
