Oregonians were always glad that he was on their TV… and not in front of their homes. For almost a decade, Mark Glyzewski was the “man on the scene” for Good Day Oregon. If he was in your neighborhood, Mark could be covering anything from a stabbing to a shooting to a snowstorm. There were so many tough stories that he handled with professionalism and integrity. But here’s some really tough news for the GDO family: our gentle giant is saying goodbye.
Today was Mark’s last broadcast for Good Day Oregon. He is leaving TV news to work for the marketing and communications department of Salem Health. It’s a big loss for us at Fox 12, and not just because he’s 6’7″.

Mark and Nicole Doll. How tall is Mark? Let's put it this way- Nicole stands about 6 foot 3.

Mark has been an essential part of our newscast, delivering numerous live reports while dealing with everything from extreme weather to belligerent bystanders. The guy is simply unflappable- able to cover breaking news stories and deliver new details without a stumble or a stutter. Whether he was covering Occupy Portland or another windstorm in the Gorge, we always knew that Mark would deliver the goods.
But while Mark is known for covering serious and sober stories… he’s actually a fun-loving guy with a great sense of humor. Mark and I have spent a lot of time discussing golf and video games (and lamenting the fact that as fathers we have time for neither). He’s a Wisconsin transplant, and always happy to discuss Packers football- especially these days. Put simply, Mark is one of my favorite people in the newsroom, and we’re all going to miss him.
But while the GDO crew is sad to see him go, we are all very happy for his new opportunity. Hopefully, it will allow Mark to spend more time with his wife Stephanie and daughter Hope (who is a tall drink of water like her old man). I know for a fact that he won’t miss getting up at 2 AM every day. And in his new media relations capacity, we’ll almost certainly get to work with him again down the road.
Still, it won’t be the same here without Marky G. He’s a great reporter and a great guy with some awfully big shoes to fill.
Seriously. He’s like a size 15.

That's mine.

Because this blog is posted on kptv.com, there are certain ground rules I must follow. Obviously, I would never use this forum to praise shows on other TV stations– my bosses probably wouldn’t like that. However, I see nothing wrong with praising shows that used to be on other TV stations. Especially when said programming features the most talented (and hottest) woman I have ever worked with. It doesn’t hurt that she’s also my wife.

As some of you may know, I am married to Jenny Hansson (her married name is actually Jenny Vithayathil, but we both agree one Vithayathil is enough for any TV market). For almost two years, she has hosted Studio 6 (formerly Keep it Local) on KOIN. Prior to that, she spent three years as the station’s morning anchor. Getting to work in Portland was a dream come true for Jenny, and the culmination of more than a decade of hard work.

Back in 1997 she started her TV career as a rookie “one-man-band” reporter in Yakima, WA. She would later hold similar jobs in Thomasville, GA and Austin, TX. You know those movies where the young go-getter starts her TV career in Miami or Seattle, then has a camera man, audio guy and producer with her on live remotes? That’s not reality. Jenny was a photographer, editor and reporter all rolled into one- often having to lug a thirty pound camera through 100 degree heat. In short, she worked for peanuts, learned the news biz and paid her dues big time.

We met in 2002 when I got a job at KABB, the Fox affiliate in San Antonio (I’ll spare you the details of our courtship- we fell in love, got married, and lived happily ever after). Even before we dated, I was impressed by Jenny’s smarts and work ethic. She was now in a bigger TV market, which meant she no longer had to shoot her own video. But, whenever the newsroom was shorthanded (which was just about every night), you would find Jenny editing her own package (pre-recorded news story). This is not something other reporters did- most would laugh in your face if you even suggested such an idea. But Jenny did it almost every night, because it meant our newsroom could dedicate resources elsewhere. She was a team player to the bone, which is one reason why she was eventually promoted to weekend anchor. Jenny’s bosses always seemed to like her, I suspect because she worked her rear-end off and was always trying to improve her skills as an anchor and reporter.

Our collective dream was always to return to the Northwest, and we got that chance when Jenny was hired as KOIN’s morning anchor in 2006. Jenny anchored the show for over three years and was awarded a new contract in 2009. Later that year (right after the birth of our second daughter), Jenny was told that she would be leaving the morning show to co-host KOIN’s new show Keep it Local. We knew this was simultaneously a great opportunity and a great risk.

Keep it Local was initially conceived as a live, on-the-scene neighborhood news show. KOIN sank a lot of coin (pun intended) into creating and promoting the show. But by the time Jenny was brought in (about four months after the show’s launch), the ratings were poor and station management decided to give the show a complete overhaul. It became Studio 6- an in-studio lifestyle show primarily aimed at women.

Jenny and I on our honeymoon.

This was a great showcase for Jenny’s talents. She was able to share her sense of humor and experiences as a working mom. The show had great producers (George and Julie) and on-camera talent (Anne, Hayley and Jake). There was cooking, music and interesting guests. As a husband, it was so gratifying to see Jenny have an outlet for her true personality- she is a smart, sweet and funny woman, and Portland got to see that every day. Yes, I am biased- but it was a fun show.

Unfortunately, all that fun didn’t improve the ratings. KOIN cancelled Studio 6 this week, with their final show airing today. There could be a million reasons why the show’s ratings didn’t improve. I do know it was not from a lack of effort: Jenny poured her soul into Studio 6- constantly brainstorming ideas and making public appearances (on her days off) to promote the show. The same can be said for her co-workers. They worked non-stop to produce a program that was (again, biased) quite fun and engaging. Which brings me to the sad and scary truth for those of us who work in TV: sometimes hard work doesn’t pay off. You can put out a great product, but if Nielsen families aren’t tuning in, you’re toast (example: Joss Whedon’s acclaimed Firefly lasted fourteen episodes while Steve Urkel’s Family Matters lasted ten years).

Ultimately, the TV business is just that- a business. It is driven by money. If your show doesn’t pull in enough ratings- look out. If your station is purchased by a new company- look out. If you’re “making too much money”- look out. I’m reminded of a long-time Portland TV personality who had spent decades at one station. One day, his bosses told him out-of-the-blue: “We’re letting you go. Today’s your last day- you can either do the 11 pm show or go home now”. There was no gold watch or even a goodbye cake- just a “thanks for the memories” and “hasta la vista”. Bare in mind, this guy hadn’t done anything wrong- it was all a fiscal consideration, where they would bring in someone younger with a smaller paycheck. I know plenty of other people, working behind the camera and in front of it, who have suffered similar fates. These weren’t Ron Burgundy types pulling down seven figures- they were regular people with kids and mortgages and bills. They were sent packing because of financial decisions made by their employers. Which reminds me of a famous quote from Hunter S. Thompson:

“The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason.”

Now, I do think that Mr. Thompson may have been engaging in a bit of hyperbole. I’ve worked in TV news for over twelve years, and have never met a thief or a pimp. I’ve known a whole lot of good people. It just so happens that some of those good people are bosses. And those bosses have bosses. And those bosses have bosses. And those bosses answer to shareholders. Which is why, although we would like to believe otherwise, TV is a cruel and shallow business like any other cruel and shallow business.

Except when it’s not.

You see, the TV business is also a place where talented people are given the opportunity to share their unique gifts with the world. That’s what Jenny and her friends got to do on Studio 6. Every day, they made complete strangers laugh and think and care. That’s a pretty cool feeling, and why people pursue careers in this crazy business. Is it a glamorous life like you see in the movies? No. But it can still be immensely rewarding- regardless of whether the curtain drops tomorrow or twenty years from now.

I realize that this has become some kind of a Kaczynski-esque, anti-establishment rant. I must point out that KOIN’s management has been considerate throughout this process and is trying to find a solution that works for our family. Unlike the people I referenced earlier, Jenny has not been treated in a callous manner. I wrote this blog not to say “woe is me”, but to tell the world that I am so proud of my wife and all that she has accomplished. A fella can get a little sidetracked when writing about the love of his life.

Here’s the good news: Jenny Hansson is far too talented to be kept on the sidelines. She will be back- once again making complete strangers laugh and think and care. And I’ll be the lucky guy who gets to call her my wife.

The Studio 6 family

This year we had a blast in Florence, OR- especially when we went on a (very bumpy) dune buggy tour of the nearby dunes. This video shows us as we go down a rather steep 40 or 50 foot drop. Because all sand looks the same, the camera doesn’t properly convey how perilous this drop was (in other words a giant hill looks like a flat surface). But trust me, it was terrifying- at least for me and my four-year-old.

I love Barbecue. I love Hip Hop. So, it’s only natural that I perform a hip-hop song about barbecue on live television, right? And best of all, I did so while paying homage to “The Doggfather” of rap.

This week, I spent a morning at Reo’s Ribs in SW Portland. The proprietor, Reo Vardano, not only smokes a mean rack of baby-backs, but he is also the uncle of hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg. When not running his restaurant, Reo works as Snoop’s personal chef, cooking for him on tours and video shoots. Reo has been all over the world with Snoop, and has some CRAZY stories (I’ll let him tell them to you).
Anyways, to spice things up for our Good Day Oregon visit, I decided to perform a musical tribute to Reo and his famous nephew. You can check it out by clicking on this link:
Joe V covers Snoop Dogg at Reo’s Ribs.
The internet is a crazy thing, because a few hours after that clip aired, I began receiving feedback from all over the country (in many cases from people that I don’t know). Apparently, someone shared the clip on facebook, then other people re-posted it and so on and so on. Why did so many people post it? I guess a nerdy news reporter doing a hardcore rap song about food isn’t an every day occurrence (unless Weird Al Yankovic works for a news station somewhere).
Because people have asked, this is how I came up with the song: I wrote the lyrics the night before and downloaded a karaoke version of “Nuthin’ But a G Thang”. Then I spent a lot of time trying to memorize the words that I wrote. Remembering the tempo and beat was no problem, because I basically grew up on Snoop and Dr. Dre’s music in the mid-90s. Seriously, I could probably perform “G Thang” backwards if I had to.
Still, I was really, really, nervous right before it was time to perform live (a secret that I didn’t share with Reo or anyone ahead of time). I never get nervous before liveshots, but in this case, there was a lot that could go wrong. In rap, if you screw up one verse, you can spend the next thirty seconds tripping over words and trying to play catch up. That would obviously make for a disastrous segment. Also, because I know the original (R-rated) lyrics so well, I was a little worried that I might slip up and say one of those words that you can’t say on TV. That could make for an even more disastrous segment, FCC fines, and a trip to the unemployment line.
Thankfully, my delivery was OK (despite one small stumble) and I’ve received a lot of very positive feedback. And no- I don’t know if Snoop has seen it or not. But, if the D-O-double G is reading this, just remember it’s a loving tribute to your music and your uncle’s food. And that, my dawgs, is fo shizzle.

This is the moment so many comic nerds (myself included) have waited for. In less than 24 hours a cocky flyboy will receive a magic ring, meet some little blue men and save the universe. Green Lantern is finally here.

I won’t lie: the early reviews have been bad. I mean, X-Men 3/Matrix Reloaded bad. So consider my expectations as tempered as they can be. Still, the fact that Hollywood has spent a Kilowog-sized pile of cash to create a faithful film adaptation of my favorite comic book has me giddy. Because there is the potential, and I want to stress that word: potential, to create a superhero movie franchise unlike any that we have seen.

So, what makes Lantern so unique? The premise for starters. You see, there isn’t just one Green Lantern, like there is one Batman and one Superman. There are thousands of them. The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic police force, supervised by the Guardians of the Universe (the aforementioned little blue men). Each Lantern wears a ring which can create powerful constructs from their own imaginations (in other words, if they think of a bowling ball, the ring creates a giant bowling ball which then knocks over the bad guys). The hero of this tale is the first human to become a Green Lantern- a Han Solo-esque pilot named Hal Jordan. He fights evil in a universe filled with some of the most bizarre life forms this side of Mos Eisley. You know how Christopher Nolan makes those awesome movies about what it would be like if Batman was real? This is not one of those stories. It’s a sprawling space opera with a list of colorful characters such as:

Hal Jordan- Test pilot, Ladies Man and all-around lovable rogue. A taller, slightly less-conceited version of Maverick in Top Gun. When the movie was announced, I thought it was too bad we couldn’t get the 1986 version of Dennis Quaid to somehow hop through a wormhole and onto the Warner Brothers’ sound stage. Instead, we got Ryan Reynolds, which I’m cool with. He’s charismatic, good with the quips, and boasts the prerequisite stud factor. Fanboys cried foul when he was cast. They wanted someone like Nathan Fillion (because they always want Nathan Fillion). But early buzz is that Reynold’s performance is the best part of the movie.

Carol Ferris- Aviation heir, pilot, and Hal’s potential love interest. Her dad owns Ferris Aviation and she and Hal have one of those will they/won’t they relationships (spoiler: they will). I should point out that eventually, Carol becomes Hal’s enemy/ally Star Sapphire. Blake Lively was cast in this part, and I have seen or heard nothing that has me too excited about her performance. Actually, that first trailer gave me flashbacks to the terribly miscast Silk Spectre in Watchmen. Fingers crossed.

Sinestro, Kilowog, Tomar-Re- These are all veteran Green Lanterns who show Hal the ropes. Sinestro is simply the most powerful Lantern in the universe- the ultimate crusader against evil. But with a name like Sinestro, you know he won’t be a hero forever. I mean, seriously- Sinestro? Why not Baron Murder Von Puppykiller? Kilowog is my favorite GL character- a giant, pig-faced drill instructor who beats newbies into a mushy, green pulp. Tomar-Re is a fish-like dude who is the conscience of the Green Lantern Corps. Kilowog and Tomar are CG constructs voiced by Michael Clarke-Duncan and Geoffery Rush, respectively. Sinestro is played by Sherlock Holmes’ baddie Mark Strong (just in case you hadn’t figured out that he’s a bad guy).

Hector Hammond- So, apparently this is the main human villain in the flick. It’s a curious decision, because Hector isn’t a character that lends himself to movies. In the comic book, most of his dialogue is telepathic (emanating from a cranium that is several yards in circumference). He has mind control abilities/telekinesis , etc.

There are plenty of other characters from the book that are in the movie. Parallax is a malevolent force determined to destroy the Guardians. Abin Sur is the Lantern that passes his ring on to Hal. You’ll also see Green Lanterns that look like rocks, jellyfish and giant eyeballs. At this point, I’m just hoping they don’t screw it up too bad. Because the potential for a one-of-a-kind adventure is there. Even if this one is sub-par, the source material is strong enough to create a sequel that is far superior (ala X-Men 2 and Spider Man 2). So, I’ll be wearing my ring and watching this weekend (and praying to the Guardians just in case).

NOTE: Hal Jordan is the first human Green Lantern, but other Earthlings have followed him in the pages of DC Comics. The best known of these is John Stewart. No, not from the Daily Show. He’s the African-American GL that you see in the Justice League cartoon. There is also former football player Guy Gardner, and a young artist named Kyle Rayner. All of these men have worn the ring and battled evil across the universe. In a perfect world, the Green Lantern franchise could be like James Bond- you do a few movies with Reynolds as Hal, then you get somebody new to take over the franchise as John Stewart. Then Guy Gardner could have his shot. And, if life is fair, Kyle Rayner will never appear in a movie, as he is a gigantic weenie.

On April 17, HBO will debut its mini-series based on George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones. AGOT is the first of 7 planned books in Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series. In recent months I have been devouring these babies on my Kindle, and if the TV show can approach the scale of its print forebears, we may be in for the most epic small-screen series of all time.

AGOT is set in the mythical world of Westeros. It is a land that resembles medieval Europe in many ways. In Westeros elite families battle for control of an ancient throne, gallant knights compete in tournaments for glory, and a group of warriors man a giant ice wall where they protect the realm from zombies and giants that ride on the backs of wooly mammoths.

OK, that part about the zombies may seem a bit off, but in the world of AGOT, those deadly details are almost incidental. High fantasy exists in Martin’s world, but it plays second fiddle (or even third) to the political wranglings and Machiavellian scheming of the kingdom’s leading families. At the heart of AGOT is a struggle between the Houses of Stark and Lannister- two noble families that are just within reach of Westeros’ Iron Throne. Their conflict is punctuated by murder, betrayal and even incest.

Series writer David Benioff has described AGOT as “The Sopranos in Middle Earth”. It sounds like a trite description- a movie pitch straight out of Tim Robbins’ mouth in The Player- but the comparisons (especially to The Sopranos) are not far off. Both series are essentially dramas about powerful families that occasionally have to send people to their graves. And just as David Chase created Tony, Carmela and Paulie Walnuts, Martin has created a gallery of fully-realized and unforgettable characters. They include:

Tyrion Lannister- The Lannisters would likely be described as the “villains” of AGOT, but “The Imp” is one of those characters that constantly makes you smile. Born a dwarf, Tyrion has been underestimated since birth. He has spent his life defying expectations and cementing his reputation as the most cunning man in Westeros (he may also be the funniest dude in the realm). Peter Dinklage will play Tyrion in the series, and this casting was a no-brainer. As demonstrated in movies like The Station Agent and even Elf, Dinklage is fully capable of projecting the self-assurance and self-doubt that are both central to Tyrion’s being.

Ned Stark- Ostensibly the “hero” of AGOT, Ned may be the last honest man in a kingdom of vipers. The head of House Stark is the best friend of King Robert Baratheon- a once great leader that is now disillusioned and drunk. In AGOT, Ned assumes the role of the King’s “Hand” (his top advisor and administrator). He quickly discovers that it is a thankless job that just might get him killed. Ned will be played by Sean Bean, best known as Boromir from Lord of the Rings. Don’t worry, this isn’t a rehash of Bean’s work with Peter Jackson. Unlike the flawed and corruptible Boromir, Ned works hard to maintain his honor while navigating a world of secret plots and deadly conspiracies.

Queen Cersei- King Robert’s wife and Tyrion Lannister’s sister, Cersei is the closest thing AGOT has to a villain. A manipulatrix on par with Lady MacBeth, Cersei has a certain “secret” that could have grave implications for the kingdom’s Iron Throne. She will be played by Lena Headey, who is best known as the title character from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Daenerys Targaryen- One of the few survivors of Westeros’ former ruling family, young Dany lives in exile with her cruel brother Viserys. In AGOT, she marries the warlord of a Hun-like people called The Dothraki. She longs to return to her family’s homeland and reclaim the throne that is rightfully theirs. Those desires will lead to the resurrection of a terrible force that Westeros has not seen in generations. Newcomer Emilia Clarke will play the young khaleesi.

Jon Snow- Ned’s illegitimate son, Jon is raised alongside his half-brothers and sisters, and is shunned by Ned’s wife Lady Catelyn Stark (also a major character). Another relative newcomer, Kit Harrington, will portray Jon. In AGOT, we will see Jon trade a life of privilege for a life of sacrifice as a member of “The Night’s Watch”. Which brings me to…

The Wall and The Aerie- These are not people, but places. Yet both are characters in their own right- crucial to establishing the soul, and scale, of A Game of Thrones. The Wall is a massive ice barrier that is patrolled by the sworn brothers of The Night’s Watch. It is considered Westeros’ last line of defense from the ancient and evil powers of the frozen far north. The Aerie is the home of Lady Catelyn’s sister Lysa, and eventually serves as a prison for Tyrion Lannister. It is a series of four massive castles that cling precariously to the side of a mountain known as the Giant’s Lance. While there are other important locations, Martin’s descriptions of the sky-piercing fortress and frigid Wall are incredible and awe-inspiring. Hopefully, HBO loosened their royal pursestrings enough to recreate those sensations on the small screen.

There are, obviously, a great number of characters and details that I am leaving out. And with only four of the planned seven Fire and Ice books published, I am skeptical that HBO will ever be able to completely bring Martin’s vision to life. Still, I have no doubt that this is the best way to create a live-action Game of Thrones. A big-screen Hollywood adaptation would leave out far too many crucial details, even if it had a running time of four hours (which it would not). Don’t get me wrong: I’m not expecting HBO to nail everything that made AGOT an incredible read. I’m just glad that their creative wizards are attempting to conjure a form of entertainment that the small screen has never seen before.

In 2002, I was a working schlub at the NBC affiliate in Yakima, WA. For three years, I had worked as a “one-man-band” reporter- shooting my own video, covering minor house fires and getting paid peanuts for the privilege. With a few exceptions, I was covering stories that I didn’t find interesting and playing the part of the “serious-and-here-to-scare-the-pants-off-you news guy”. In short, I was working in TV, but forced to act like someone that I was not. That all changed the day I came home to find the baritone voice of Greg Koelfgen on my answering machine.
You see, my dream at the time was to be a TV feature reporter. I’ve always been a fun-loving, slightly creative guy, and I wanted a job where I could cover fun and positive stories. Unfortunately, there are very few full-time feature reporting jobs out there (for example, in Portland, there are two- maybe three total). One day, while perusing a TV jobs website, I found a posting for a feature reporting job at KABB in San Antonio, TX. I immediately slammed together a resume tape of some old clips, and had it in the mail by that afternoon. I wasn’t kidding myself: news directors get hundreds of tapes whenever there is any kind of opening, and through the years I had been turned down for less-desirable “hard news” jobs in towns like Greensboro, NC. I did not expect a call. But, hey, you never know, right?
I almost fainted when I heard Greg’s voice on the answering machine that day. I called him right back. I was so full of adrenaline, my words were flying a mile a minute- we’re talking Vince Vaughn on speed. Long story short: I got the job and have now worked as a full-time feature reporter for almost nine years.
But that’s not the end of the story. It turned out, not only did I get a great job, but I got one hell of a boss. “Great Guy” doesn’t do Greg Koelfgen justice. During my four years at KABB, I never heard him raise his voice or utter an unkind word about anybody. He learned what your strengths were, and then helped you to make the most of your talents. Greg would encourage me to report on my various interests like movies and video games, because he felt that my innate enthusiasm would make for better segments. And if he did have criticisms, it always came in the middle of what my wife dubbed a “compliment sandwich”. Greg was proof that you didn’t need to be an a-hole to succeed in the cutthroat world of television news. And he was very succesful. KABB had (relatively speaking) a shoe-string operating budget, but through Greg’s vision the station still cranked out an extremely popular and profitable television product. Today it is one of the top-performing Fox affiliates in the country.
Greg didn’t just change my career path- he changed my personal life as well. You see, when I arrived at KABB, I met a cute reporter (with Northwest ties) named Jenny Hansson. She is now my wife and the mother of my children. Just like me, Jenny owes much of her success to Greg’s supportive nature. He was the first person to ever allow her to anchor a newscast (she had exclusively been an on-the-scene reporter). By the time she left KABB, Jenny was hired as a full-time anchor and is now the host of a lifestyles show in Portland. There is no question that we would not be where we are (professionally or personally) without Greg Koelfgen’s guidance and friendship.
And I don’t use the word “friendship” idly. Yes, we were his employees- but Greg cared for us as people first. In February of 2005, I was going through a very difficult period. I was having terrifying episodes where I thought I was going to have a heart attack and die. I would recover, and then be terrified that another episode was around the corner. Then the sensation would come again, and I was sure that I was dying. It was a non-stop cycle of fear. Finally, Jenny took me to the emergency room, where I was dripping in sweat and freaking out. It turned out, I was having panic attacks.
Are you kidding me? This was all in my head? I was beyond embarrassed. Unfortunately, one of these attacks required me to take a sick day from work. I had to tell Greg why, and there was no way I was going to lie to the man who had given me so much. So, I explained that “I was just freaking out”. Greg was quick to correct me. It turned out, members of his immediate family had also dealt with panic disorder. He knew first hand that it could be debilitating, and he knew the only thing that could make it better was time and treatment. I should point out that this was during February “Sweeps”- one of the most important months of the year when advertising revenue rates are set. In TV, you do not take time off during sweeps. I mean EVER. But Greg insisted that I take the necessary time off to treat my problem. He didn’t care that I was working on heavily-promoted “American Idol” tie-ins. Greg’s first priority was my personal well-being, and if the newscast took a little hit, it took a little hit.
I can tell you that kind of empathy is not easily found in the television news business. I have been very lucky to have great, understanding bosses- but Greg took it to another level. And because of that, I did some of the best work of my career while working for Greg. It’s not that I was worried that he would yell at me if I screwed up- he would never do that. But, I felt a need to justify the faith that he had in me. He was, simply, an inspiring leader.
You can probably guess where I’m going with this. Last night, Greg passed away. It was completely out-of-the-blue, and we still don’t know what happened. I didn’t get a minute of sleep last night. Jenny and I are devastated. So too are our friends and former co-workers at KABB.
No matter how many words I write, I will never be able to truly express what Greg Koelfgen meant to me. There are so many things I’m leaving out:
Like the fact that he was an incredible journalist and an amazing writer. I can remember a time when Greg wrote a feature story that was so funny and clever, I felt like an absolute novice.
The man knew his rock-and-roll and his baseball. I mean, Greg was almost twenty years older than I was, but he was way hipper than me when it came to the latest bands. He was an Orioles fan, which didn’t give him a lot of reasons to celebrate. But hey, you sure couldn’t accuse him of being a bandwagon fan.
And like me, Greg was a devoted husband and proud father. He coached his daughters’ softball teams, and I swear he must have driven to every diamond in the state of Texas. There was no question the man loved his job, but I’m pretty sure Greg would give anything to spend a couple hours with his girls on the open road, driving to a tournament in College Station or Round Rock.
In recent years, Jenny and I kept in touch with Greg, despite our distance in miles (well, Jenny did most of the keeping-in-touch. I’m pretty useless in that department). We had left San Antonio in 2006, because we wanted to return to the Northwest and our families. But we would often reminisce about our times at KABB, which were some of the best years of our lives. In 2008, we took our daughter Siena to see the old crew in the Lone Star State (baby Josie wasn’t born yet). Uncle Greg was beaming as he held a life that he helped make possible.
Today, as my girls grow older, I hope that I can teach and guide them in a way that would make my mentor proud. Greg Koelfgen was an incredible Television News Director, but as far as I’m concerned, his most memorable lessons had nothing to do with TV or Journalism. He taught me how to treat people. He taught me how to be a real man and a real father.
More than anything, he taught me how to live a good life.

It’s not every day that you get immortalized in maple by two of the northwest’s most revered jelly-filled geniuses. Today I spent the morning at Voodoo Doughnuts, where owners Cat Daddy and Tres surprised me with my very own doughnut likeness (They also made me another doughnut that is less family friendly. I will not be showing it here). I spent almost four hours shooting the breeze with the guys and I was pleasantly surprised by how cool and down-to-earth they are. I realize this may seem silly to out-of-towners, but the two doughnut dudes are Portland celebrities. They have been on just about every national food show, from Anthony Bourdain to Man vs. Food. Their creations have also been on The Tonight Show, Good Morning America- Cat Daddy and Tres were even featured in a Simpsons special that aired on Fox (jealous). Let’s face it, at this point, they don’t really need “local” publicity, but they were very appreciative and accomodating hosts for yours truly. And even though they kind of embody the ironic and “weird” vibe of Portland, they aren’t too-cool-for-school hipsters. Basically, they’re just a couple of fun-loving dudes who love living in Portland. So, the next time you’re scarfing down one of their maple-and-bacon bars (my personal fave), you can know that you’re supporting a company that exemplifies what the Rose City is all about: good food, good people and good times.

As one of the many opinionated , self-important people on the internet, there was no way that I was not going to name my “favorites” of 2010. But, as a sleep-deprived working father with two young children, there was no way I was going to spend a lot of time doing it. So, forget about lists of my favorite movies, TV shows, video games or books of the past year. Instead, I’m picking my single favorite piece of entertainment from 2010. And when the dust settled, the year that was belonged to a lone gunslinger from New Austin.
Red Dead Redemption was the greatest story I experienced in the past year. There were great movies (Inception), great TV shows (Lost) and great books (from Freedom to Fables). But none of them engaged me quite like the story of John Marston, a videogame character dreamed up by the folks at Rockstar Games.
I could write a thousand paragraphs about why RDR was such an incredible achievement, but no description could ever have the impact of actually playing the game. And I almost hesitate to use the words “play” or “game” in regards to RDR- this is a world to experience. A world where you can hop on your trusty steed, and ride miles through a desert of banditos and coyotes. Your destination? Perhaps a snow-capped mountain range where you can hunt elk for their meat or even bears for their fur. Along the way, you might encounter a pack of wild mustangs, and “break” one for your own use. Then, you might join a friendly card game or break up a lynch mob. Whatever you choose to do, this is the closest you will ever get to living in an old Spaghetti Western. The visuals, sound and scale are amazing.
But what is most revolutionary (to me) about RDR is the storytelling. John Marston is the greatest character in the history of videogames. It would have been very easy for this guy to be a simple Clint Eastwood archetype: the weary gunfighter looking for peace in a world of violence. Yet this “virtual” man felt more real than any character I encountered in film or television. John is a loving father who would do anything for his family’s safety- even violate his own ideals of right and wrong. He’s been chewed up, spit out, and yet, he never complains. His world is harsh and uncaring, and all John Marston can hope (and fight) for is a better life for his son Jack.
And that is what makes RDR an unforgettable experience. Yes, you spend a great deal of time shooting guns and hogtying villains. But that’s just part of the journey. For instance, in RDR’s final “level”, John takes down the main bad guy, satisfying his superiors and freeing his family in the process. Normally, that would be when the tough guy rides off into the sunset, and the credits roll. Instead, a suprising thing happens: Red Dead Redemption continues. You get to experience John’s daily life as he settles down to live as a quiet rancher with his family. Gunfighting is replaced by cattle herding. Instead of chasing robbers from a bank, John chases crows from his crops. And as this man of violence settles into a life of pastoral peace, he re-connects with his family and lays the groundwork for one of the most unexpected (and heartbreaking) climaxes I have ever seen.
Red Dead Redemption may be labeled a video game, but make no mistake, it is not a “game”. This is not about who wins or loses. RDR is an incredible opportunity to walk for miles in the shoes of a good man through a bad and beautiful world. It is the greatest Western since “Unforgiven”, and the top artistic achievement of 2010.
